Wedding at Alexander House Hotel
I am always thrilled to be recommended and Althina and James came my way from friends whose wedding I photographed in 2015. It was really lovely to hear all about the small and intimate summer wedding they had planned at The Alexander House Hotel and Spa in Sussex and I knew I was going to have an amazing day with them both. It was extra special as they were getting married on the day of their 10th anniversary of becoming a couple.
Athina and James’s wedding was the first for me at The Alexander House Hotel. This beautifully renovated Jacobean Mansion is close to East Grinstead in Sussex has some gorgeous interiors and magnificent grounds, just perfect for photos. The couple had booked only 6 hours of my time as they only had around 45 guests and didn’t need a full of evening cover. I took Jim along with me so that he could capture the boys while I was with the bride.
Athina was getting ready in one of the gorgeous Cedar Lodge Suites along with her mum. When I arrived she was in the middle of having her hair done by Phoebe Bashford which was then followed by makeup by Emma Lily Curran. It’s unusual to have such a small party in a room while a bride is getting ready but it was incredibly special to spend the time with Athina and her mum. They were both in very good spirits!
While I was busy capturing the brides’ details Jim was having some fun with the boys.
Athina looked stunning in her ‘Essence of Australia’ dress that she bought from Isabella Grace Bridal in Tunbridge Wells. Some of my most favourite moments of a wedding day are when a mum helps a bride into their dress, they can be so poignant and this was no exception. Athina looked so elegant, stylish despite looking surprised when she watched the veil go on! I thankfully had a few minutes to take some gorgeous portrait shots of Athina before her brother arrived to whisk her to the ceremony.
The weather was absolutely perfect and the ceremony was held in the hotel gardens in the pretty wedding gazebo. After a beautiful ceremony Athina, James and their guests moved to a secluded part of the hotel grounds for a drinks reception and I spent some time capturing lots of lovely informal shots of the guests followed by their family groups.
Sometimes with smaller weddings couples are happy to take a little more time over their portrait shots and this was what happened with Athina and James. I had about 40 minutes with them before they headed to their reception. We made the most of the grounds and of the architecture of the hotel too and got some of my favourite images of the day.
The wedding reception was held in the pretty Wakehurst Suite which is ideal for smaller weddings and has its own terrace and outdoor space which was just perfect as it was a beautiful warm summer day. The room was dressed beautifully and I really loved the flowers that were the clever creation of Sharon Boon at Flowerbug Designs.
Athina and James sat on their own sweetheart table for the wedding breakfast which was adorned with two very large Mr. and Mrs balloons. Speeches were very heartfelt and, in his, James gave Athina an enormous box of chocolates. (as Athina is a bit of a chocoholic!)
After speeches the couple cut their fantastic wedding cake which was made by Athina’s talented Aunt. They cut the cake using an enormous sword which made for some fun pictures!
Then it was time for Athina and James first dance and it wasn’t long before they were joined on the dancefloor by their loved ones young and less young. Looking at the dancefloor you wouldn’t have guessed this was a small wedding, this lot were certainly up for a party!
A little later I whisked Athina and James away for some romantic lit night shots making the most of the exquisite lighting in Alexander House. It was fun dodging the other guests and staff in the hotel and well worth the effort as I got some really gorgeous and romantic images.
I absolutely loved shooting Athina and James’ Alexander House Hotel wedding. Beautiful, simple, low-key and full of joy. Congratulations you two on getting married and thank you for allowing me to tell the story of your gorgeous wedding day.
